As the year winds down, business owners face a whirlwind of responsibilities—wrapping up projects, managing holiday schedules with key team members out of the office, and tackling the inevitable distractions that come with the season. Yet, amidst this chaos, one crucial activity often gets overlooked: stepping back to reflect on the past year and prepare for the next. This reflection is not just a task, but a powerful tool that can inspire and motivate you for the year ahead.
I know what you're thinking: "I don't have time for that!" But here's the thing—taking a step back isn't wasted time; it's the launchpad for moving forward.
Take a cue from professional athletes. They have seasons—a defined beginning and end—to push themselves to their limits, rest, and then regroup. Even the greats, like Steph Curry, understand this. Now, imagine if Curry played basketball non-stop, even during his so-called vacation, ignoring pleas from his family to be present. His body and mind would eventually crumble, no matter how much kale he ate or yoga he did. Businesses, unlike sports, don't have an off-season, which makes it even more critical for leaders to create one. Remember, rest is not a luxury, but a necessity for peak performance.
Here's my challenge to you: channel your inner MVP and take two days—a mere 48 hours—to unplug completely. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let the vastness of nature remind you that while your work is essential, you're not precisely solving world hunger. Use this time to reflect. What went well this year? Where did you grow? Where did you fall short? And most importantly, where do you want to go in 2025—as a leader and company? This reflection will not only provide clarity but also a roadmap for the year ahead.
Encourage your team to do the same. Make it a company-wide timeout. Over the next few weeks, allow your leaders to step back and assess so everyone comes back in January ready to share their insights and align on goals for the year ahead. Sometimes, the best way to move forward is to take a moment to hit pause.
And if you still need to take that break, remember this: even your phone needs to recharge occasionally. So, take a cue from the ultimate multitasker in your pocket—power down, recharge, and come back stronger. After all, you can't pour from an empty coffee cup (and we both know how much coffee you've consumed this year).
Here's to hitting pause, recharging, and returning in January ready to conquer 2025.
